Watercolours of the Prairies – grasslands, fields and farms of Southern Alberta

Changing the format of a painting from rectangular to square creates challenges in composition and limiting the size adds more complications.  These works are 5.5 x 5.5 inches square

Three weeks in October of 2014 at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Annaghmakerrig in Ireland –  time to experience the land and light of a beautiful country, the opportunity to meet a wonderful group of people and indulge in the atmosphere and food of this fantastic estate.  I returned after the fire in spring of 2019, for a time of retreat and restoration.  These watercolours reflect the challenges of the light, lake and countryside.

In September, 2015,   Tuscany Plein Air  provided an opportunity to experience Villa Tantafera in Tuscany with its incredible vista of Florence, Italy.  The challenge of focusing on working en plein air while in close proximity to other painters, in addition to experiencing life in an historic villa, was unforgettable.

After the wildfire of 2017, returning to painting again involved using unfamiliar paper, paint and brushes as well as the kitchen table in a neighbour’s house. It took a long time for me to be able to actually pick up a brush again. I decided to start the journey back by doing small paintings of the scene outside my temporary kitchen window as often as time and inclination permitted.

Journeys to places other than the prairies and into new (for me) ways of expression in watercolour.  Most were done en plein air.
